Here are the top 14 Foods that Lower Cholesterol.

April 2nd, 2010
  • 1. Whole grains and oats – people whose diets contain the most whole grains have the thinnest carotid artery walls and showed the slowest progression in artery wall thickness.

  • 2. Blueberries – a compound in blueberries may help lower cholesterol as effectively as commercial drugs with fewer side effects.
  • 3. Pistachios, 4. Walnuts, and 5. Almonds – eating pistachios significantly lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Actually eating walnuts after a high-fat meal might protect your heart. Omega-3 fats and antioxidants in nuts work to reverse the arterial damage caused by saturated fats.

  • 6. Avocados, 7. Olives, and 8. Olive oil – The good fats in avocados, olives, and olive oil protect against heart disease and diabetes. Check out the Mediterranean Diet.
  • 9. Flaxseed oil – flaxseed oil can lower blood pressure in men with high cholesterol. It can significantly lower blood pressure.
  • 10. 100% cranberry-grape juice – antioxidants in grape juice slow down LDL cholesterol oxidation, and cranberry juice raises HDL or “good” cholesterol.

  • 11. Fish and Fish oil – People with type 2 diabetes who consume high doses of fish oil have lower the cholesterol in their bodies.
  • 12. Black soybeans – black soybeans may help prevent obesity, lower LDL cholesterol, and reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes.
  • 13. Pomegranate juice – pomegranate juice reduces cholesterol plaque buildup and increases nitric oxide production (nitric oxide helps reduce arterial plaque).
  • 14. Yogurt with live active cultures (probiotics) – the probiotics Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Lactobacillus Reuteri actually help lower cholesterol. They work by preventing the reabsorption of cholesterol back in to the blood stream.”

You might be a person who is predisposed to high cholesterol, or maybe your diet could use a shape-up. Here are a few key points on cholesterol to focus on:

  • LDL or “bad” cholesterol deposits itself on the walls of your arteries, forming plaques that make them hard and narrow. HDL or “good” cholesterol removes excess LDL in your blood and brings it to your liver for disposal. The more HDL you consume, the less LDL you’ll have in your blood.
  • You may need medication to help reduce your cholesterol, but eating a heart-healthy diet and getting exercise are very important.
  • Everyone should have their cholesterol checked-it doesn’t matter if you are young/old, female/male, or thin/overweight.

Love and “Faults”

March 29th, 2010

When someone does something you don’t like, try toleration. Tell them in your nicest way that you do not feel good about what occurred or what was said, but try hard not to cold-shoulder them, and block them out of any warm connection with you.

All you teach them by that is to be afraid of you – by making them afraid of losing you…or at least the warmth of their connection with you.

Give people the same break you would like God (and other people, for that matter) to give you.

Being “right” has nothing to do with it.

November 25th, 2009

The idea that you call “right” is the idea that someone else calls “wrong.” The solution that you call “perfect” is the solution that another calls “unworkable.” The position that you feel is unassailable is the very position that others assail.

What will solve all of this? Not attack, that’s for sure. And not defense, either. So what is left? Simple human love. The kind of love that says, “It doesn’t matter who is right or wrong. It only matters that you are not hurt. And that we both can benefit. All true benefits are mutual.”

Any frustration you have is simply the result of wrong thinking.

November 21st, 2009

frustration

If you were thinking rightly you could not possibly

imagine that

anything was going ‘wrong.’ You would know that

nothing in the

Universe is working against you. By definition, given

Who You Are, this is impossible.

Move, then, to gratitude when you encounter your frustrations.

And see every event as an Opportunity.

True ambition is not what you thought it was.

November 20th, 2009

ambition

“True ambition is…

the profound desire to live usefully and walk humbly

under the grace of God.”

What is your ambition for today? What is on the top

of your priority list? What are you hoping to do today?

What are you hoping to be?

Your answer to this question will create not just the

day, but you.

With Love

5 WAYS TO GET A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP

November 16th, 2009

1.   Have a regular bedtime ritual. This way the brain learns to recognize sleep and wake times. Here some ideas:

  • Listen to some relaxing instrumental music perhaps before going to bed. Music with words tend to provoke your thoughts.
  • A good book or a magazine may help distract you from your own life and thus help you drift in to sleep.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation is a great idea, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes and back up.
  • Have a hot bath with a few drops of lavender oil since lavender has relaxing properties.

2.              Avoid caffeine or alcohol too close to bedtime. Alcohol is a diuretic, caffeine can stay in your system for hours. Coffee, chocolates and regular tea should be avoided at least 3 hours before bedtime.

3.              Keep the temperature in the bedroom slightly lower than the rest of the house.

4.              Remove the TV and the computer from your bedroom. The suggestive association between sleep and the bedroom is diminished by having these in there. Furthermore, stop looking at both of those screens at least 1 hour before you go to sleep.

5.              Write a ‘to do’ list for the next day. This way you will help order your thoughts and clear your mind of any distractions.

6.              Watch your diet. Spicy and fatty foods may cause heartburn. Tyramine, found in foods such as bacon, cheese, egg plant, avocado, nuts, soy sauce, red wine; causes the release of norepinephrine, a brain stimulant. Instead drink chamomile tea which helps soothe the nerves. Warm milk, turkey, potatoes,  bananas, oatmeal and whole wheat bread are all more conducive to a better night’s sleep. N.B. Calcium along with Magnesium has a calming effect, so try 500mg Calcium with 250mg Magnesium.
